Why Free School Lunches Should Be A Necessity
One in five Canadian students goes to school hungry due to a lack of food at home. To combat food insecurity, schools should provide free nutritional lunches to all students, regardless of their family's financial situation.
There are multiple reasons as to why this is a necessity. Firstly, proper nutrition is very important for children as it is essential to their physical health, mental well-being and development. Having a proper nutritional diet also improves a student's academic performance as a lack of healthy food can result in the deterioration of a student's focus, learning abilities and participation in school activities. Secondly, offering free school lunches can eliminate the barrier between students who can and can not afford nutritious food. Students with families that can not afford lunches can cause insecurity which negatively affects their mental health and their ability to succeed at school. Free lunch programs can rid this stigma ensuring students have a fair shot of succeeding in school. Lastly, having healthy school lunch programs can reduce the chance of students developing health problems such as obesity and diabetes. The school lunch programs can help promote healthy eating habits. Families with lower incomes are more likely to buy their kids fast food as it is cheap and quick, having these nutritional meals at school can decrease the risk of these children developing health problems.
Free school lunch programs should be a priority for the Canadian government as they ensure a positive future for all Canadian children.
